This is the largest temperate running bamboo in the world, only a few tropicals will grow larger.

The culm wood is thick and the leaves are small. New shoots and culms are covered with a fine furry hairs, hence its name.

It is used for timber, pulp and edible shoots. This species will take several years to reach full size in a grove. It will grow larger in the warm wet summers of the southeast, which resembles its native habitat in China.

It is one of the world's most important commercial bamboos and one of the most beautiful outside of the tropics.

Synonym: Phyllostachys heterocycla f. pubescens.
