Ampelocalamus
A genus of subtropical semi-scandent clumping bamboos that consists of 11 known species. Usually found in wetter subtropical forests below 1500m (5000') in native China, India, Burma, Nepal and Vietnam. They range from tender to light frost hardy. The upper portion of the culms are pendulous with nodding tops sometimes reaching up to 40' in height. Culms are often rough and striated with prominent corky rings that provide a grip to help catch tree branches for support as they scamble up tree branches and undergrowth. The branches often have strong bent joints which also assist with climbing, making them attractive pendulous bamboos.
