Phyllostachys
Medium to giant bamboos which have a distinct groove above pairs of branches at mid-culm nodes. They are the most common genus in the US. Used for many purposes they send their shoots up in the spring. It is the largest genus in cultivation and one of the most useful. They generally prefer hot summers and mild winters. Some are extremely cold hardy and many will behave as a clumping bamboo in colder climates.
