A bamboo from is a native of Japan that has a lot of confusion about its taxonomic ID. It is similar to S. fastuosa, having green culms changing to a purplish color. The ABS source list has this bamboo with longer branches than fastuosa, but in fact they are shorter. The culms grow more dense and it is prized as a windscreen and hedge. It is also often confused with S. makinoi which grows much shorter and smaller in stature.
