The tallest of  the genus with very upright culms. The culms and branches turn a brick red or purple brown when exposed to the sun. The shoots are edible and distinctively flavored. This bamboo is valued in landscaping for forming a tall hedge or screen. Under most conditions this bamboo is not an aggressive runner. It is tolerant of high PH soils and salt air.
