A bamboo that is grown throughout Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu and Shikoku) and Sakhalin and Kuriles in Russia. It has large dark green leaves up to 11 inches long and 3 inches wide. Given the range of its native habitat, this bamboo should be much more cold hardy than the current specs state.

NOTE: A variegated form discovered as a mutation in 1928 in Japan of this bamboo once existed in the west called nobilis but it is thought to have died out due to flowering in 70s.
