This variety of nigra is one of the three largest timber bamboos in the US. The other giants that are comparable in size is Moso and P. bambusoides.

Henon is much more cold tolerant than the other two. It is used in construction, water pipes, scaffolding, roofing poles and bamboo utensils.

The culms and branches are all green and the culm walls are thicker than P. nigra. its mid-season shoots are bitter raw, but very good after parboiling.

It sought after as a large landscape bamboo.
