This bamboo is the 2nd largest temperate bamboo in the US. It is highly prized for its timber, both here and throughout Asia. Ph. h. p. 'Moso' is the only bamboo that is larger and Ph. nigra 'Henon' is right behind Ph. bambusoides in wood quality. The culms are bright green and are well spaced and is free of branches on its lower nodes.

This species needs warm summers to grow well.
