The culms are green, aging to grey. It is a very quick growing species and is useful for landscaping or instant effects in the garden. Its large culms are stiffly upright. The culms emit a slight perfume that is noticeable in an enclosed area, the scent is similar to sandalwood incense.

It has the ability to endure wet conditions because it has evolved air channels in its rhizomes similar to Ph. heteroclada. The shoots are among those having the least bite when raw. It also makes this one of the most cold tolerant bamboos that can be planted out.

Distribution: China: Zhejiang, Jiangsu.
