The culms as well as the foliage are dark green. It is exceptionally cold hardy and is a vigorous species that makes an excellent hedge. its rhizomes are reputedly even more cold resistant than those of Ph. auerosulcata or Ph. nuda. After a hard winter it is among the best of the Phyllostachys genus for retaining a fresh unbattered look. It also produces early season shoots for the table.
